{"id":1009,"date":"2021-02-23T09:57:09","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T17:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wssra-units.org\/southwest-unit30\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2021-06-04T00:40:18","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T07:40:18","slug":"swwsra-zoom-meeting-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wssra-units.org\/southwest-unit30\/swwsra-zoom-meeting-minutes\/","title":{"rendered":"SWWSRA Zoom Meeting Minutes &#8211; February 18, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>10:11 AM <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Linda Bannon<\/strong> opened the meeting and led the members in the flag salute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dr. Alan Burke (Executive Director) <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Burke reminded us that the retirement seminar is this evening at 5:00 PM. There are 2,200 educators registered. Hopefully, this will result in new members. This year\u2019s annual convention will be October 3-6 in <strong>Pasco, WA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reported the following legislative issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We need to keep our <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Medicare Eligible Healthcare Benefit<\/strong> stable at $183.00 per month.<\/li><li>Make the actuarially recommended pension payment.  <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Mina Milligan <\/strong>mentioned that the republicans are sponsoring a bill to merge pension funds for the <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Teachers Retirement System Plan 1<\/strong> and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Law Enforcement Officers &amp; Fire Fighters Plan 1<\/strong>. Currently, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">TRS 1<\/strong> is underfunded and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">LEOFF 1<\/strong> (Law Enforcement Officers &amp; Fire Fighters) is overfunded.  <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Dr. Burke<\/strong> explained the big difference between the two groups.  <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">LEOFF <\/strong>are very protective of their plan.<\/li><li>Two bills that failed are <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">#1040<\/strong> to re-open the <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">PEBB<\/strong> enrollment window for retirees who opted out or were not able to join <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">PEBB <\/strong>at the time of retirement and reducing the retirement age from 62 to 60.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Bruce Boyer (WSSRA President-elect) <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruce Boyer\u2019s task right now is to fill openings on State committees. He reviewed the open positions and referred us to the Willingness to Serve form on the WSSRA website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are still open for the <strong>SW-4<\/strong> region and are for one year and can be continued if the person desires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;The SW regions for the <strong>Awards Committee<\/strong>&nbsp; (this is a three-year position, but from what I can tell doesn&#8217;t require a lot of time commitment)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are still open for the SW-4 region and are for one year and can be continued if the person desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Membership:<\/strong>  Donna Quesnell will continue<\/li><li><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Retirement:<\/strong>    Despo Varkados will continue<\/li><li><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Convention:<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; I currently have Ron Crawford and Pat Sloson.&nbsp; I still need the CC chairperson and one other person.<\/li><li><strong>Legislative:<\/strong>    &nbsp; Mina Milligan will continue There is one remaining spot.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TREASURES REPORT: (Marty Erickson)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Savings Account Revenues<\/td><td>$7,752.07<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Checking<\/td><td>$484.98<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>12 Month Certificate<\/td><td>$3,119.62<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Scholarship Account<\/td><td>$3,031.92<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Net worth to date<\/td><td>$14,387.74<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Marty Erickson<\/strong> reported that there is $1,342.62 remaining for mini-grants. Most of the grants have gone to Camas teachers. He sent in<br>$300 to <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">WSSRA\u2019s Foundation<\/strong> in honor of <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Gene Forrester.<\/strong><br><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Despo Varkados<\/strong> exclaimed that we need <em style=\"user-select: auto;\">\u201cmore bang for our buck\u201d<\/em>. Everyone agreed with her! Having a picture taken with one of the school Foundation\u2019s recipients was discussed. <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Marty Erickson<\/strong> said he would be willing to make a large check on a piece of plywood for a picture take. There was a discussion concerning informational mailings sent to all of our members. <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Bruce Boyer<\/strong> will send <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Despo Varkados<\/strong> and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Linda Bannon<\/strong> an example of their newsletter that his unit sends out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Mina Milligan<\/strong> will call for information about <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Unit 28<\/strong>\u2019s printer, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">South Bay Press<\/strong> (Mel is their contact) <strong>4003 8th Ave SE Lacey WA 98503 (360) 459-3015<\/strong> and The Mailbox of Olympia (Dave is their contact) <strong>120 State Ave NE Olympia WA 98501 (360) 754-6800<\/strong>. Their monthly expense for 950 members are (rounded to nearest $):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bulk mailing=&nbsp;$250 <\/li><li>Printing=&nbsp;$265 <\/li><li>Mailing= $137.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MINUTES (Mina MilIgan)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>January 21, 2020 Minutes were approved as written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MEMBERSHIP (Margaret Snitzler)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Linda Bannon<\/strong> reported for <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Margaret Snitzler<\/strong> that we now have 510 members, down from 516 members in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HEALTH (Fran Person)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">PUD\u2019s <\/strong>Utilities monthly newsletter <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Fran Person<\/strong> stated that the <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">City of Vancouver<\/strong> and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Clark Public Utilities<\/strong> need help ensuring streetlights continue to work properly. If one malfunctions, do you know who to call? The simplest way to identify whether a street light is maintained by a city or the utility is street light ID tag on the pole, which is highest on the pole. Often there is more than one tag on a pole, so make sure you\u2019re inspecting the right one. The number can be found on most poles approximately 10 feet above the ground and will be at least nine digits on yellow. If the code begins with the letter \u201c<strong style=\"user-select: auto;\"><em style=\"user-select: auto;\">P<\/em><\/strong>\u201d it is maintained by <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Clark Public Utilities<\/strong>. If it begins with something else, the light is maintained by the city. When reporting a streetlight issue, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Clark PUD<\/strong> will ask for the number on the pole or the street address location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FRIENDSHIP (Jane Madden)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Birthday cards were sent to <strong>Joy Gault<\/strong>, <strong>Marty Erickson<\/strong>, <strong>Margaret Snitzler<\/strong> (belated for her Dec. birthday&#8211;Valentine Day card) February 6, Sympathy cards were sent to families of <strong>James Brothers<\/strong>, and <strong>Barbara Cox<\/strong>. <strong>Jane Madden<\/strong> will send cards to the family of <strong>Roy Brothers<\/strong> as soon as she receives an updated address from the State, which will be after the first of March. He passed away <strong>February 15<\/strong> at age of <strong>92<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MINI GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS &amp; DONATIONS (Waneta Filbin)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Mina Milligan<\/strong> reported that $350 will be granted to suitable requests from school employees until $8,000 is used up. In the last couple of days, there have been many requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Irma Slocum, (Donna Quesnell)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">CECELIA<\/strong>, <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Irma&#8217;s <\/strong>care-taker, and <strong style=\"user-select: auto;\">Irma&#8217;s <\/strong>kids&nbsp;are really spending a lot of time to make this special for their mom,<strong style=\"user-select: auto;\"> Irma Slocum<\/strong>.
